Target Students:  Postgraduate students registered on applied psychology courses within the School of Medicine. Occupational Psychology, Work and Organisational Psychology, Management Psychology. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.  Available to JYA/Erasmus students.

Prerequisites: degree in psychology or other relevant subject with permission from the module convenor

Corequisites:  None.

Summary of Content:  This module introduces the important issue of motivation and employee relations at work, and considers the contribution that psychological theory makes to our understanding of these areas. The module also considers the role of the psychological contract as a concept for understanding management/employee relations, explores the issue of conflict and bullying in organisations and discusses issues around diversity.

Education Aims:  This module aims to provide students with knowledge of human behaviour and employee relations in organisations; in particular, how psychology (specifically social and occupational psychology) can contribute to our knowledge of behaviour at work. The seminars aim to introduce the conceptual and theoretical foundations of employee relations.

Learning Outcomes:  

Knowledge and Understanding

On completion of this module students should be able to:

  • Understand the conceptual and theoretical foundations of employee relations
  • Have knowledge of the changing nature of employee relations and its impact on aspects of the employee-employer relationship
  • Reflect on the role of the individual, team and organization in managing the employee-employer relationship
  • Understand the positive and negative outcomes of managing/not managing the employee-employer relationship
  • Intellectual Skills: problem-solving, analysis & synthesis, critical evaluation, and independent learning.

    Professional Practical Skills: the ability to reflect on what the research means for practice.

    Transferable Skills: retrieve information from databases and the Internet.
