Prerequisites: Registration on a graduate course in the School of the Built Environment.

Corequisites:  None.

Summary of Content:  This module will examine the various sources of renewable energy suitable for use in buildings. It will concentrate on wind, water, waste heat, solar, geothermal and bio-mass as potential sources of energy and investigate the contribution they can make to a building's energy requirement, the technology used to harness them and limitations associated with their use.

Two 1-hour lectures per week; three hours of tutorials. Breakdown of hours: lectures - 20 hours; tutorials - 3 hours; private study - 52 hours.

Education Aims:  

Education Aims: This module aims to provide students with a thorough grounding in the appropriateness, use and limitations of implementing / integrating renewable energy technologies / systems within buildings. It seeks to tackle key issues such as orientation, sizing and specification, how they operate and how they are integrated into the design process overall. It will highlight the importance of simple design tools (such as PVSyst) in this process and how they can be used to help optimise the solution under examination.

Learning Outcomes:  

On successful completion of this module, students will demonstrate:

  1. qualitative knowledge and understanding of renewable energy systems and technologies available for use in the built environment
  2. an ability to explore these systems and technologies in a rigorous and coherent manner using appropriate software modelling tools and other techniques
  3. an ability to select appropriate technology(ies) and integrate it / them into the design of a building and its services
  4. practical skills that allow them to identify and evaluate commercially viable opportunities for reducing CO2 emissions associated with buildings by appropriate specification of renewable energy technologies
  5. an ability to research, critically appraise and explore the concepts covered within the module in a rigorous manner
  6. organisational skills and an ability to manage time carefully
  7. an ability to interpret, manage, manipulate and communicate complex (and often interrelated) information in a manner that is appropriate, rigorous, creative and legible
