Corequisites:  None.

Summary of Content:  
This project involves individual students in undertaking an original, independent, research study into an engineering topic appropriate to their specific MSc programme. The project may be undertaken on any topic which is relevant to the MSc stream, as agreed by the relevant Course Director and project tutor. In undertaking the project, students should draw on and extend material presented in the course. The project has several aims, beyond reinforcing information and methodology presented in the taught modules; the student is expected to develop skills in research, investigation, planning, evaluation and oral and written communication. Final reporting will take the form of a written account including a literature review and an account of the student’s contribution. An interim presentation will be made to academic staff.

Education Aims:  Beyond gaining detailed knowledge in the specific topic of study, the aim is for the student to gain skills in planning, executing and reporting on an individual research study thereby developing their powers of analysis, independence and critical judgement.

Learning Outcomes:  On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

  • LO1 – Extract and synthesise pertinent data and information from identified technical literature and other information sources.

  • LO2 – Identify and critically evaluate current and developing technologies related to their own specialisation.

  • LO3 – Demonstrate the application of the main principles of project planning and management.

  • LO4 – Execute and report on an experimental, theoretical, computational or design investigation.

  • LO5 – Generate and process experimental, theoretical, computational or design data including the analysis, evaluation and interpretation of the results using a variety of software tools.

  • LO6 – Select and apply mathematical, scientific and technological principles to model, analyse and solve problems creatively.
