Target Students: Individuals with experience of work in any area of Information Technology in relation to human work, learning and recreation. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice. Available to JYA/Erasmus students.

Summary of Content: Students will conduct supervised work on a practical project relating to the design, evaluation or implementation of ICT for the support of learning. The details of their project will be negotiated with a supervisor

5 hours contact time including small group work and discussion

30 hours engagement with VLE or other system supporting learner reflection

25 hours structured study

40 hours preparation of portfolio and presentation

One written assignment of 2,000-3,000 words, or equivalent portfolio to complement oral presentation

Education Aims: To develop in participants a critical understanding of design and practice in a relevant situation of ICT-supported learning.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and understanding
This module develops knowledge and understanding of:

the principles and practice of designing an ICT artefact
the principles and practice of researching effective ICT use for learning
the principles and practice of implementing ICT-based innovations for learning
research techniques relevant to the design or implementation of educational technology

Intellectual skills
This module will develop:

the ability to analyse ICT innovation in terms of its educational significance
skills in presenting succinctly and clearly to a range of audiences (orally, electronically or in writing) principles of good design and practice for educational technology

Professional/practical skills
This module will develop:

the ability to critically analyse the potential of ICT in contexts of learning
the ability to analyse research findings and theoretical arguments relating to technical innovation.

Transferable/key skills
This module will develop:

effective use of general ICT facilities;
the ability to apply theory to a variety of practical settings
the ability to appraise research and evaluation.
